My First Waffle House Experience: Why Southerners Love It So Much

Living in Northeast Indiana, one thing we simply don’t have is Waffle House.

Recently, I took a trip to the beautiful Beau Rivage Resort & Casino in Biloxi. After spending some time enjoying the casino, I decided to rent a car and explore beyond the resort restaurants.

While driving around town, I passed a Waffle House.

Then another.

At that point, I figured the universe was trying to tell me something.

So I stopped.

I finally got to experience my first meal at Waffle House, and now I understand why people in the South are so loyal to it.

Is it five-star resort dining? Of course not.

But that’s completely missing the point.

The food was quick, inexpensive, filling, and honestly pretty darn good. Sometimes you don’t need an upscale steakhouse or a chef’s tasting menu. Sometimes you just need a hot breakfast, a cup of coffee, and a bill that doesn’t make you question your life choices.

While chatting with an employee, I learned there are several Waffle House locations around Biloxi. After looking it up later, I discovered there are roughly 3 to 4 locations within just a few miles of the Beau Rivage, and around 10 locations spread throughout the greater Biloxi, D’Iberville, and Ocean Springs area.

That’s when it clicked.

Waffle House isn’t just a restaurant in the South. It’s part of the culture.

For those of us who don’t have them back home, it’s easy to overlook. But after finally stopping in, I get it. The food is affordable, the service is fast, and there’s something refreshingly honest about the whole experience.

Will I skip the Beau Rivage restaurants next trip?

Not a chance.

But I can absolutely see myself making another Waffle House stop before heading back to the casino.

Sometimes a simple breakfast is exactly what you need.
